Whitireia, established in 1985, carries deep cultural significance, named after the Whitireia maunga (mountain), which is an important symbol in Māori heritage. It has a long-standing history of providing quality education and training to the Porirua and surrounding regions.
WelTec, founded in 1904 as the Petone Technical School, has a century-long legacy in delivering practical education. Over the years, WelTec has grown to become a leader in training engineers, IT professionals, creatives, and social services specialists.
In 2022, Whitireia and WelTec transitioned into Te Pūkenga, a government-led initiative aimed at providing flexible learning opportunities across online, on-campus, and on-the-job settings. This transition marked a significant step in reshaping vocational education in New Zealand.
